How BMI Is Calculated
Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m). It provides a quick screening tool to categorize individuals into underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese ranges. While BMI does not directly measure body fat, it correlates with more direct measures of body fat and is widely used in clinical settings.
BMI Categories
- Underweight — BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight — BMI 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight — BMI 25.0 to 29.9
- Obese — BMI 30.0 or higher
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass, which means that muscular athletes may have a high BMI despite having low body fat. Age, sex, ethnicity, and body composition all influence the relationship between BMI and health risks. For a more complete picture, consult a healthcare provider who can assess additional factors like waist circumference, diet, physical activity, and family history.
